Syrian Rue seeds have been used in traditional medicine and ritual across the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa for thousands of years. Burned as incense, used in folk medicine, and consumed in ritual beverages. The B. caapi vine is the MAOI component of ayahuasca — also brewed alone as 'vine of the soul' for its own medicinal and spiritual properties.
Growing research interest in harmine as a potential antidepressant and neuroprotective agent. 2019 research showed harmine promotes neurogenesis in human neural cells. Studied extensively in the context of ayahuasca pharmacology research.
Syrian Rue seeds are legal in the US and most countries as ornamental/herbal products. The isolated alkaloids (harmine, harmaline) have ambiguous legal status in some jurisdictions. B. caapi vine legal in most countries.
